Elkhart County Foodshed Initiative

Cultivating collaborative and dynamic connections for a community-based food system

The Elkhart County Foodshed Initiative grew out of the Purdue Extension Rebuilding your Local Food System pilot program (click here for more info).

Since April 2014, we have been convening a county-wide conversation about the challenges and opportunities facing our local food system.  Our initial events focused on public outreach and community asset mapping.  As a pilot community, we also took part in a variety of food systems workshops, tours, and statewide events.

Based on the information gathered thus far, we are focusing our energy this fall on four aspects of particular significance to Elkhart County:

  • Food Access - improving access to fresh, healthy produce throughout the County
  • Local Procurement - facilitating new connections between local growers and markets
  • Farm to School - improving child nutrition and food literacy through the introduction of local food
  • Infrastructure - addressing key leverage points in our food value chains to open up new markets and food production capacity
