Elkhart Region Local Farm & Food Economy Survey Grant

In 2011, the Indiana Department of Health commissioned Ken Meter of Crossroads Resource Center to study emerging local food initiatives and survey the corresponding agricultural, health and economic data.
With new 2012 agricultural census data released by the USDA, the Elkhart County Foodshed Initiative sought to relate Meter’s statewide findings to Elkhart County and compile additional local data.
In May, with a generous grant from the Goshen Hospital and Healthcare Foundation, ECFI commissioned Ken Meter to perform a “Finding Food in Farm Country” survey for Elkhart County and the 7 adjacent counties.  This survey has provided a useful reference point for assessing community food security and identifying key challenges and opportunities to focus on.
