From Purdue Extension's Rebuilding Your Local Food System Asset Map Roles:
Production includes farmers growing or raising food for consumption. They range from the small farm to large commodity growers that have some sort of role in the local food system. Because most growers are in rural areas, we have to think of our growers living in a foodshed or geographical area that serves our community, much like a watershed feeds into the nearby river system. Perhaps a group of growers have formed a cooperative or guild that can channel communication efforts. Producers can also be food entrepreneuers that are producing a food product for local consumption, or a farmer that sells freezer meat, or a large meat processor that works with growers in the foodshed to process for them.
