From the FarmPlate glossary:
Direct marketing is a method in which farmers and food producers market and sell their products directly to consumers rather than via an intermediary distributor or wholesaler. Direct marketing generally involves face-to-face interactions with consumers through farmers’ markets, CSA programs, on-farm sales and agritourism as well as direct sales to wholesale customers, such as restaurants and markets. Direct marketing is an effective method for small- to medium-sized producers with relatively small advertising budgets. The benefits of this type of marketing include higher returns on each unit sold, fresher food for consumers and a closer connection with the community, resulting in a flourishing local food system.
